You can save the label somewhere when you assgin it.

Code:

buttonLabel = 'mylabel'
button = viz.add( viz.BUTTON, buttonLabel   )
button.label = buttonLabel

...

print button.label

I suggested something similar when you are attaching weapons to avatars.
