When a light is added, a transform is also added directly above it in the scene graph. It is this transform that is selected initially. I'll put in feature requests for the light node to be selected by default after it's added and your other light related requests. Thank you for the good suggestions.

Perhaps a slightly faster way than doing an unselect/reselect is to click on the light node in the scene graph. You can also click on the light icon directly in the viewport as long as one of the transform modes is not enabled.
