I'm pretty sure the problem is that you installed the unicode version of wxPython. Uninstall wxPython then download and install the normal version. Here's a screenshot of the download...

I tried the running demo.py and it works fine on the machine here. The splash screen doesn't go away until you click on it. Did you try this? I haven't tried installing Boa Constructor...
