Custom Screen resolutions

We are running a dell XPS with a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS graphics card. We can't get the display resolution to the necessary 640x480 we need in horizontal span for our HMD. Does anyone know how to set this? We can make a custom 640x480 display that works for single display mode, but it won't work in the horizoltal span.

Does each monitor natively support a 640x480 resolution? I've never tried to use horizontal span with a 1280x480 resolution. It might not be supported by your monitor.
