Alpha and Texturing questions

I am from rowan university and I am trying to create two tools for multi-layer data viewing. I want to create a "Magic wand" that when moved across a surface makes the surface transparrent and a tool that will make a large segment transparrent for easier viewing.
The methods i was looking at for this were Using Vertex information, and Using textures with alpha maps. So my first question to you is, is there any way to get vertex and or face information for imported objects and apply alpha values. My second question is is there any easy way to move a texture across an imported surface.

I have a sample script that does something similar to this, but it is written for Vizard 3.0. Are you willing to use Vizard 3.0 instead?

I've attached a zip file that contains a sample script and an alpha map. This technique projects an alpha map texture onto a model. A shader is applied to the model which will use the alpha map to control the transparency of the model. In this example, the projector is attached to the viewpoint. This gives a sort of x-ray vision for the user.

Let me know if this is not what you were looking for.
