Exporting materials from 3DS Max

I am using the Worldviz Cal3D exporter for 3DS Max, following the suggested tutorial to export a character. This has worked fine in the past. Now I am having problems with the materials - the character shows up entirely black in Vizard (no warning / error messages).

The character I am using is f028 from the Rocketbox Complete Characters HD casual set. In the Max file there are multiple meshes for different LOD. In the Material Editor there are two scene materials: 'f028' and 'f028_opacity'.

Attempting to keep things simple, I am ignoring the opacity for now. This is the process I followed:

Show scene material f028 in Material Editor
Rename materials to f028_head [0] and f028_body [1]
Got to Edit > Select By > Layer... f028_hipoly_81_bones
Export mesh as .CMF
Export materials as .CRF, adding 'Maps\' as the subfolder in the file name
Paste relevant .tga files into the Maps folder
Write .CFG file

I've also tried selecting the same mesh plus the opacity mesh and exporting the selection as one .CMF file, then exporting the materials in 'f028' and 'f028_opacity' in all possible combinations, but none have worked.
